Christie came out of the kitchen when we let ourselves back into the condo. I smiled at the thought of how Arugulaâs beloved sports mags would fight over a picture of her in her turkey bedecked apron, with flour on her cheeks. Iâd watched her play many times, and as Iâd pointed out in one of my profiles (an opinion Christie did not dispute) her reputation as one of the most genial players in her league tended to obscure the fact that she was just as unrelenting in her pursuit of victory as players whose reputation was more combative. When she ran into someone, they went down hard.
âYou guys ready for French toast?â
âTotally ready,â I said. Cy wagged agreement.
But Blaise went straight to Christie and hugged her tight, burying their face in Christieâs shoulder.
âHey, not complaining, but whatâs this about?â
âI doubt Iâll ever be able to write an equation that explains us,â Blaise muttered. âI mean, Iâll keep trying of course.â
âOf course. What did Cameron do to you? Whereâs all your holiday enthusiasm gone?â
Blaise pushed themself back and smiled. âNot gone, just modulated. And it wasnât Cameron. Iâll tell you later. Just remembering youâre the solution to all my equations.â
âYouâre my slam dunk.â Christie kissed the top of their head and shot me a sharp look.
Someone new had joined Nash in the TV room.
The guest stood up when we came in. It took me a moment to place her, not in office attire this time, but in pale peach leggings under a t-shirt dress, her professional bun replaced with a high, thick ponytail. She grinned, showing fangs, when she saw me.
I hadnât noticed, on our previous encounter, her long, red nails. It might be necessary to re-evaluate Arugulaâs boasting of scratches.
âCameron! My hero.â
âYou two know each other?â Christie asked.
âI had my foot caught in a trap and Cameron came to my rescue,â Orlee said
âI had some help.â
âDoesnât make it any less heroic. Is uh â¦?â she looked around eagerly.
âArugula is still off radar,â I said. âShe was very eager to be here today, though.â
Orleeâs face fell.
âOrlee works for the Ospreys,â Christie said. âBut sheâs actually a fencer, training for the Olympics.â
âBy the grace of Bastet,â Orlee said. âAnd Christie. She got me into the program. She wonât tell you, but sheâs a major supporter of upcoming athletesâ
âAs her accountant, I can neither confirm nor deny that,â Blaise said.
Cy grumbled. âI agree,â I said. âWe were promised food and here we stand, starving.â
