Christie came out of the kitchen when we let ourselves back into the condo. I smiled at the thought of how Arugula’s beloved sports mags would fight over a picture of her in her turkey bedecked apron, with flour on her cheeks. I’d watched her play many times, and as I’d pointed out in one of my profiles (an opinion Christie did not dispute) her reputation as one of the most genial players in her league tended to obscure the fact that she was just as unrelenting in her pursuit of victory as players whose reputation was more combative. When she ran into someone, they went down hard.

“You guys ready for French toast?”

“Totally ready,” I said. Cy wagged agreement.

But Blaise went straight to Christie and hugged her tight, burying their face in Christie’s shoulder.

“Hey, not complaining, but what’s this about?”

“I doubt I’ll ever be able to write an equation that explains us,” Blaise muttered. “I mean, I’ll keep trying of course.”

“Of course. What did Cameron do to you? Where’s all your holiday enthusiasm gone?”

Blaise pushed themself back and smiled. “Not gone, just modulated. And it wasn’t Cameron. I’ll tell you later. Just remembering you’re the solution to all my equations.”

“You’re my slam dunk.” Christie kissed the top of their head and shot me a sharp look.

Someone new had joined Nash in the TV room.

The guest stood up when we came in. It took me a moment to place her, not in office attire this time, but in pale peach leggings under a t-shirt dress, her professional bun replaced with a high, thick ponytail. She grinned, showing fangs, when she saw me.

I hadn’t noticed, on our previous encounter, her long, red nails. It might be necessary to re-evaluate Arugula’s boasting of scratches.

“Cameron! My hero.”

“You two know each other?” Christie asked.

“I had my foot caught in a trap and Cameron came to my rescue,” Orlee said

“I had some help.”

“Doesn’t make it any less heroic. Is uh …?” she looked around eagerly.

“Arugula is still off radar,” I said. “She was very eager to be here today, though.”

Orlee’s face fell.

“Orlee works for the Ospreys,” Christie said. “But she’s actually a fencer, training for the Olympics.”

“By the grace of Bastet,” Orlee said. “And Christie. She got me into the program. She won’t tell you, but she’s a major supporter of upcoming athletes”

“As her accountant, I can neither confirm nor deny that,” Blaise said.

Cy grumbled. “I agree,” I said. “We were promised food and here we stand, starving.”
